CARTOGRAPHY

BTech: (Baccalaureus Technologiae)

The aim of the course is to provide theoretical and practical cartographical knowledge and skills, relevant to the needs of the industry and society at large.The use of computer technology in map production, geographical information systems, and cartographic workstations is the norm in this environment today.

Graduates of this programme will be able to design maps and analyse spatial information.

Purpose and Rationale of the qualification
To manage a mapping or GIS office.

Career Opportunities
Cartographers works closely with surveyors, geologists and similar professionals and are involved in planning and development. They are responsible for map design and the acquisition and processing of source material for map production.Different types of map include topographical maps, maritime charts, aeronautical charts, climatic maps, road maps and street plans, tourist maps and town and regional structure plans.

Professional Registration
The BTech: Cartography is accredited by South African Council for Professional and Technical Surveyors (PLATO). Graduates will comply with the academic requirements and may after completion of the prescribed practical training and law exam apply for registration as a professional GISc practitioner
